Certificates of births, marriages and deaths can be obtained from the relevant local Register Office, by post or phone from the General Register Office at Southport as well as online from:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
However, the majority of local Register Offices do not use the detailed General Register Office indexes found on microfiche at various Archives and Family History Centres. The local records are organised by sub-districts so you need to know the area in which the event took place and, preferably, the date. If you are lucky, a search may be made for you, but check with the Register Office first – they are usually very busy. The certificates cost £9.25 online or £9.00 from the local register office. When contacting the Register Office, remember always to send an SAE or 3 IRCs (International Reply Coupons) for your reply.
